BACKGROUND: A wiki link for you.
PERSONALITY:

Oliver is a smart guy. He's well read and has text books for various subjects on the shelves of his apartment. However, it's when it comes to technology his skills really shine. He's an extremely talented hacker and it's clearly a hobby he's been practicing for years. He enjoys it to the extent he quit his mundane IT job with the intention of being hired on by a woman he's hacked for on numerous occasions. When he's physically present in a high stress situation he does tend to come across as clumsy and nervous, but despite that he is actually still pretty good at coming up with successful plans on the spot. On one occasion he is confronted by someone he's catfished and has reason to suspect he's killed before. Not only does Oliver get him out of his apartment and into a public space, but he gets a straw he's used that can be used to sample his DNA without arousing his suspicion further than he already has. In his not so distant future he plants evidence on an active crime scene he has to leave and come back to with employees from multiple emergency services present. He's a mess, but no one catches on that he's both taken evidence right from under their noses and returned it after wiping any incriminating data.

In more neutral or positive environments he adapts far more naturally, struggling to some extent with the social side, but even with his awkwardness he tends to at least come across as likable. He's friendly to almost everyone, and it takes a lot for him to actively dislike someone. Even with people Oliver's not overly keen on he will generally put on a face of politeness, though he's not above making low key digs that hint at his disapproval while he's around them. He's always been supportive of those he likes, and while he's making an active effort to do more things for himself this hasn't stopped. Not long after his current canon point his friend Michaela finds out her ex is getting married. Oliver is quick to reassure her that Aiden's new fiancee's apparent happiness is fake and suggests they go for drinks after they're dismissed from work. Sometimes he takes this to a point beyond what he should. In working with his ex he's a little too friendly still, trying to keep things as close to what they were before their break up without them actively being in a relationship. While animosity wouldn't help either he takes this to a point where it's honestly unhealthy for both himself and Connor. He initially tries to deter him from moving out and even cooks him a congratulatory meal to celebrate winning his first client's legal case. He wants desperately for them to remain on good terms, but both still hold feelings for each other and the problems in their relationship haven't been addressed. Because of this his attempts frequently wind up being confusing and messy.

Change has been a major theme in Oliver's life in recent times, and one he himself has decided to initiate. He's trying to find a version of himself he likes better. It's a work in progress, and as such a number of his actions seem at odds with each other. He's said he's not sure whether his decision to try and live his life more fully is down to the people he's met or to do with his recent diagnosis of HIV, but he's realized how stagnant his life has become and it's not something he's happy with. He's seen as safe. Average. Boring. None of these are things that he wants to be and he resents that role more than ever. Oliver has always had ambitions, but between a lack of opportunities he hasn't sought out himself and too many years of playing it safe he's never done much to get there. Now through his most recent boyfriend he's got a taste of what it's like to hack things regularly for a cause, and he's found it's something he doesn't want to lose. He's persisted even when he's been directly told not to and though it's been a source of conflict he sees it as something exciting he can be a part of and he's not willing to give that up.

He has a lot of admiration for his current boss, Annalise, and has a very glamorized idea of the work she does. He knows not everything she does is good, if not the full extent of it. In some ways this makes it easy to dismiss just how dangerous the things he's getting wrapped up in could be. When Annalise's students are including him in their sleepovers to protect themselves from Philip, the man Oliver had catfished, he actually seems a little annoyed with being forced into it. To him it seems like they're overreacting. He does know they suspect Philip's a killer. A good number of details are still hidden from him, including the fact they've been receiving threatening emails.

He's committed numerous cyber crimes on Annalise's behalf even before she hired him. He started out hacking for information to help her clients win in exchange for sexual favors from his now ex-boyfriend, so he's been aware of her willingness to use dubiously gained advantages from the beginning. He knows that at least Connor has been made miserable by working for her, but that hasn't put him off either. Even though Connor was always adamantly against him seeking employment with Annalise, Oliver persisted. He pushed and pushed until he got the job and so far it's not something that he regrets. This is partly because it is more exciting than his last job as an IT tech at an advertising agency, but not entirely. Technically his role is just as basic as his former one. He helps students find information to defend pro bono clients, and he's even taking a break from hacking, albeit one that turns out to be short lived. The difference in this job is that the concept itself is more exciting and he feels as though he's doing important work, making a positive difference to people in difficult situations. He's said he views defense attorneys as being there to help people who can't help themselves. He does think overall that the work she does is good, and even a number of the bad things she does hold appeal to him. He enjoys the excitement of being able to do something he shouldn't be and in his mind he can easily justify the means used to get there if it means the outcome will be a good one.

Despite that, Oliver knows that some of the changes in his life haven't been for the better. When it comes down to it he doesn't like the person he is now any better than he liked the person he was before, and in some ways he feels he knows himself even less than he did then. Maybe he's not as uninteresting as he used to be, but he's selfish in his decisions and has done things he regrets. His most recent relationship broke down because he deleted his boyfriend's acceptance into Stanford and prevented any confirmation of the decision getting back to him. He hid that for months and the fact that Connor was willing to forgive him immediately scares him. It's not that Connor was wrong about his motivations. Oliver didn't feel like he was being listened to. Once he realized Connor had got in underhandedness seemed like the only to keep his life being uprooted and moved to California, but he also benefited from both of them staying. If he'd moved then he wouldn't have had the opportunity to work for Annalise, something he desperately wanted. She'd have been unlikely to hire him if Connor had gone, too, since he was their main connection to each other. His initial deletion of the email and phone call to Stanford was impulsive, but keeping them from being able to contact Connor further and hiding it for months longer himself was more deliberate action, one that took a good deal more thought on his part. He doesn't want to be good, but he doesn't want to be a person who lies to the people he cares about. He certainly doesn't want to be someone who's allowed to get away with it.

After something like that it seems contradictory to say he values honesty, but he does, at least between people who are supposed to have a positive relationship. He doesn't care so much about the inherent dishonesty of his hacking, but to him a personal betrayal takes things to another level entirely. He wants to be trustworthy towards those he respects, and would like the same treatment in return.

He struggles to cope with knowing people he cares for hide things from him, even knowing he could get into trouble himself for knowing the details. He doesn't think people have faith in his ability to handle things and feels his friends believe him to be weak. He feels coddled much of the time and this is something that upsets him. It leaves him feeling as though he's not being treated as a member of the group, even with all the time he spends with them and the occasions they've been invited into his home. That's something that hurts.

He has always had a large number of insecurities and these still exist. He worries a lot about what people think of him. Oliver doesn't think much of his appearance, even after trading in his glasses for contacts. Canon doesn't give him the opportunity to share his own feelings on the matter or even be aware that it's happened, but on one occasion he's dismissed as a potential partner because he's Asian. There's little chance he hasn't come across that attitude by more direct means, and it certainly hasn't helped his already low self-esteem.

In recent months he's also had to start coming to terms with a HIV+ diagnosis. For all the progress that's been made with treatments it's still yet another thing that makes him different and comes with a whole range of misconceptions, some of which he's only learned the truth of through living with it himself. His viral load might be undetectable, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have a big impact on his life. He has to take daily medication and attend frequent medical appointments for the rest of his life. He knows there are people who wouldn't even consider the possibility of dating him because of it, and that there are people who still believe they could catch it from him through any number of impossible ways. He keeps it to himself for the most part, but that doesn't mean it doesn't effect him. He has to hear uninformed remarks still and worry about how people's opinion of him would change if they did find out.

Maybe it's because of his insecurity he's so eager for people to like him. If it's at all possible then he tries to be on friendly terms with people, He's a people pleaser by nature, and will often make questionable choices if he thinks that these will make people like him better. To call him a pushover would be inaccurate despite how it may appear. He can be swayed quite easily, but he's usually aware that it's happening and if it's something he really feels isn't in his best interests then he won't allow for it. He knows how to stand up for himself, and if someone close to him wrongs him then they're sure to learn from Oliver himself that he doesn't like being treated badly.

This doesn't mean he wants to be viewed as perfect either. He hates his flaws being ignored. What he wants is to be seen for who he is, not as an idealized or simplified version of it. He doesn't want his more negative traits to be accepted, but he's aware that brushing them aside doesn't help him better himself either. And that's something he does want. For all his thrill seeking and insistence that he can be bad, he wants to be a better person too.

ABILITIES:

Oliver is from a world without supernatural aspects, but his abilities with technology is well above average. He skilled at hacking and is perfectly capable of accessing the Philly police department computer systems on a regular basis without managing to draw their attention. He's also shown to have other skills in similar areas such as wiping phones, presumably to the point officials looking for evidence of such acts not being able to tell.

Although he is good at what he does he isn't perfect. He has a lot of overconfidence and this is where he's been shown to fail. He is reckless and will sometimes hack without it being necessary, and he doesn't always put precautions in place. While he hasn't been caught by authorities he has been picked up on by other hackers and he doesn't always consider that questions might be asked about where information has come from.
