NAME: Oliver Hampton
CANON: How to Get Away with Murder
AGE: 32 (31 in canon)
APPEARANCE: Here!
CANON POINT: 3x02 (post-S1 Futurology)
BACKGROUND: Wiki
PERSONALITY:
Oliver is a smart guy. He's a talented hacker and it's clearly a hobby he's been practicing for years. He enjoys it to the extent he quit his mundane IT job with the intention of being hired on by a woman he's hacked for on numerous occasions. When he's physically present in a high stress situation he tends to come across as clumsy, but despite that he is actually still pretty good at coming up with successful plans on the spot. On one occasion he is confronted by someone he's catfished and has reason to suspect has killed before. Not only does Oliver get him out of his apartment and into a public space, but he gets a sample of his DNA without arousing his suspicion further.
In more positive environments he adapts far more naturally. Even with his awkwardness he tends to come across as likable. He's supportive, and while he's making an active effort to do more things for himself this hasn't stopped. Sometimes he takes this beyond what he should. In working with his ex he's overly friendly, trying to keep things the same as they were before their break up. He takes this to a point where it's unhealthy for both of them, acting as a couple while denying that they be one. Because of this his attempts to remain on good terms frequently wind up being confusing and messy.
Change has been a major theme in Oliver's life in recent times, and one he himself has decided to initiate. He's trying to find a version of himself he likes better. It's a work in progress, and as such a number of his actions seem at odds with each other. He's said he's not sure whether his decision to try and live his life more fully is down to the people he's met or to do with his recent diagnosis of HIV. One thing he is sure of is his life has become stagnant. Oliver has always had ambitions, but has played it safe for too many years. Now through his most recent boyfriend he's got a taste of what it's like to hack for a cause, and he's found it's something he doesn't want to lose. Although it's been a source of conflict he sees it as something exciting he can be a part of. He's unwilling to give that up.
He has a lot of admiration for his current boss, and has a glamorized idea of the work she does. He knows not everything she does is good, if not the full extent of it. In some ways this makes it easy to dismiss just how dangerous the things he's getting wrapped up in are. He's committed numerous cyber crimes on Annalise's behalf even before she hired him. He knows that Connor has been made miserable by working for her, but that hasn't put him off and so far being hired by her isn't something he regrets. This is partly because it's more exciting than his last job as an IT tech, but not entirely. Technically his role is just as basic as his former one. The difference in this job is that the concept itself is more exciting and he feels as though he's doing important work, making a positive difference to people in difficult situations. He's said he views defense attorneys as being there to help people who can't help themselves. He does think overall that the work she does is good, and even a number of the bad things she does hold appeal to him.
Despite that, Oliver knows that some of the changes in his life haven't been for the better. Maybe he's not as uninteresting as he used to be, but he's selfish in his decisions. His most recent relationship broke down because he deleted his boyfriend's acceptance into Stanford. He hid that for months and the fact that Connor was willing to forgive him immediately scares him. He doesn't want to be good, but he doesn't want to be a person who lies to the people he cares about. He certainly doesn't want to be someone who's allowed to get away with it. While he doesn't care so much about the inherent dishonesty of his hacking, to him a personal betrayal is unacceptable. He wants to be trustworthy towards those he respects, and would like the same treatment in return. He struggles to cope with knowing people he cares for hide things from him, even knowing he could get into trouble himself for knowing the details. He doesn't think people have faith in his ability to handle things and feels his friends believe him to be weak.
In recent months he's also had to start coming to terms with a HIV+ diagnosis. For all the progress that's been made with treatments it's still yet another thing that makes him different and comes with a whole range of misconceptions, some of which he's only learned the truth of through living with it himself. He has to take daily medication and attend frequent medical appointments. He knows there are people who would think less of him for it. He keeps it to himself for the most part, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have an impact on his already low self esteem.
Maybe it's because of his insecurity he's so eager for people to like him. He's a people pleaser by nature, and will often make questionable choices if he thinks that these will make others like him better. However, it would be inaccurate to call him a total pushover. Around people he's not overly keen on he will generally put on a face of politeness, but Oliver's not above making digs that hint at his disapproval while he's around them.
He can be swayed quite easily, but he's usually aware that it's happening and if it's something he really feels isn't in his best interests then he won't allow for it. Much of the time when he caves to pressure from others it isn't him that would suffer the worst consequences. He knows how to stand up for himself, and if someone close to him wrongs him then they're sure to learn from Oliver himself that he doesn't like being treated badly.
This doesn't mean he wants to be viewed as perfect either. What he wants is to be seen for who he is, not as an idealized or simplified version of it. For all his thrill seeking and insistence that he can be bad, he wants to be a better person too.
ABILITIES:
Mechanical Intuition (Stage Two)
INVENTORY:
(List from here.)
HATHAWAY.
SUITABILITY: Having already been part of the team under ALASTAIR, Oliver already actively desires to stay on. The missions help fulfil his desire for excitement, and at least some of the time leave him feeling as though he has done something worthwhile. He still has doubts of his capabilities compared to many of those on the team and he can panic in stressful situations, but he does want to be there and contribute the best he can.
INCENTIVE: A place in Stanford Law School for Connor Walsh with student fees covered and a nearby home. He can't change what he's done, but maybe he can help put his life back on track.
SPECIALIZATION:
1. Sentinel: He wants to be useful. Let him be useful! This is not such an obvious choice as inventor, but Oliver nonetheless wants to be needed by those around him. He wants skills that will help improve his ability to be a useful team member, and would likely feel he could manage that as a sentinel.
2. Inventor: Oliver's talents absolutely lie in tech. His main area is 21st century computers, but his knowledge is wide and he is adaptable. He is helped by abilities purchased through ALASTAIR that aid him in learning new types of technology quickly, but he has always had a passion and aptitude for this area.
